The Eye Foundation of Canada hosted its annual “Thanks for My Sight Night” as a dinner dance at Montecassino Woodbridge. The special evening featured live performances from the Maple Academy of Dance, pianist Mr. Sheng Cai, and a special guest appearance by Mr. Bill Watters.

For the second consecutive year, Canadian heavyweight boxer, George Chuvalo, was a special guest at “Thanks For My Sight Night” at Woodbine Racetrack.  George not only spoke to a captive audience and mingled with guests, but was also kind enough to offer some personal boxing memorabilia for the silent auction to generate funds for the Eye Foundation of Canada.

The Eye Foundation of Canada is pleased to have dedicated board members, the majority of whom have served for over a decade and dedicated their time voluntarily. They support our initiatives, serve as mentors for our EFC scholarship students, contribute to all important decisions for the foundation, and give their unique expertise in managing a charitable foundation. The EFC remains grateful for their contributions to EFC and to the welfare of the community.

The Eye Foundation of Canada is committed to expanding our services to the community. To assist in the funding of our services,  mailings are sent out to potential donors and annual events are held.  In the past, EFC has collaborated with the Toronto Blue Jays and the CNIB ‘Sight Day with the Jays’. The EFC continues to  host its annual ‘Thanks for My Sight Night” which is always well attended by EFC scholarship recipients, ophthalmologists, patients, community partners, EFC board members, and family and friends of the foundation. In 2017, another annual community building event was launched: Skate for  Sight. This evening invites guests to a skate party in a local indoor arena where EFC members meet family and friends in a informal fun setting.

Do you wonder what your donation allows us to do?

The Eye Foundation of Canada sponsors medical student education and research in ophthalmology to help create more young enthusiastic and leading ophthalmologists for Canada.  We provide public education about eye disease and engage in research with outstanding eye care specialists. Our mission is to improve patient care through education and research.

The Eye Foundation is focused on expanding  public awareness in industries to educate workers on eye safety in the workplace. We have successfully expanded our summer scholarship program to encompass more students from across Canada. As we proceed from success to success we will continue to undertake new projects in our mission to improve patient care.

However, in order to do this, we need your help. View our previous events.

Every summer, we award one or more medical students who have just completed their second year of medical school, with a $8,000.00 scholarship to spend the summer furthering their education in ophthalmic medicine, surgery and research.

The program consists of education and research experience in the diagnosis and management of eye disease. It is conducted at the Eye Associates with portions at various University of Toronto teaching hospitals, encompassing all sub-specialty areas in ophthalmology. Each student will become involved in at least one research project that is supported by the Foundation.

To date there have been 50 EFC Summer scholars since we began the program in 1991, two thirds of whom have gone on to careers in Ophthalmology.

Past summer scholars include:

Dr. Steve Arshinoff, President of the Eye Foundation of Canada, strikes a pose with hockey legend, Johnny Bower, who handed out personally autographed pictures of himself with Tim Horton behind his net as he greeted and welcomed every guest at Sight Night 2010!

“Thanks for My Sight Night” was held Wednesday October 8, at Woodbine Racetrack, which was great fun, as always, and oversold, as usual.

Once again, special guests, patients, valued friends, and EFC board members celebrated the continued success of the Eye Foundation of Canada and its dedication to Ophthalmology.

With over $200,000 raised in past years, The Eye Foundation of Canada truly appreciates the ongoing support by everyone who participates in this special evening at the races!
